I pretty much managed by the seat of my pants, as most optometrists do coming out of school. I was very competent clinically as I had been trained well in this area, but reached a point in my practice where it just would not grow anymore and practicing became very frustrating. I found that getting trained in a technology for management and implementing that technology into my practice was just as important to my success as a private practitioner as was my training in clinical care. That shouldn’t be surprising as I would never think I could be successful practicing optometry without the clinical skills necessary, so why would I think I would be successful in running the business side of optometry without the proper training.
